I am interested in ceramics that is playful yet functional. Ceramic pieces are found throughout our daily lives; the idea that we can craft something so beautiful with clay is so fascinating to me and my work. Vessel forms are one of those items I am very interested in. They can hold food, flowers, or things to decorate but have the potential to say anything. This idea of the form having the potential to hold anything influenced me and my work. Vessels have this sort of mystery to them because what is it they are containing? What do they hold? These questions kick-started the exploration of my educational journey through ceramic arts.
I created work to represent what my brain contains. My brain is the “vessel,” As a student with academic challenges, my brain contains much more thoughts and ideas. Like a vessel, it can hold objects or items. My brain contains knowledge, words, and language. I explored how the alphabet can be used to make words and what it has the potential to say. Throughout the process, I connected the dots within my life. I was able to combine my love for art and learning. I had the realization that art has always been a constant in my life. I was able to look back at early schoolwork to find out I had always explored color and words through my designs and projects from when I was a kid.
